Projects

The DELANO KINDRED has a number of on-going projects being conducted to further our knowledge and appreciation of Philippe Delano and his history. Here are the current projects:

The Emerald Books Project

The Emerald Books Project is series of four books that will supersede and update Joel A. Delano’s now outdated, The Genealogy, History, and Alliances of the American House of Delano, 1621 to 1899 (often referred to as the GHAAHD). The books will extend the GHAAHD's genealogy to the first eight generations of descendants of Philip Delano of the Fortune (1621). A limited number of hardcover volumes will be available, with softcover volumes to follow. The goal is to have the first volume, Delano 1, published by the end of 2024. The plan is to follow this schedule:

  • 2023/4 Delano I (Philip Delano for Five Generations)
  • 2025/6 Delano II, pt. 1 (Mary [Delano] Dunham, Philip Delano, Thomas Delano, generations 6 through 8)
  • 2027/8 Delano II, pt. 2 (Esther [Delano][Sampson] Soule, John Delano, Jonathan Delano, generations 6 through 8)
  • 2029/30 Delano II, pt. 3 (Jane [Delano] Weston, Rebecca [Delano] Churchill, and Samuel Delano, generations 6 through 8)

The Research Project

This is an ongoing effort to prove, using accepted genealogical practices, the ancestry of Philippe de Lanoy as far back in history as possible. Included in this project are histories and genealogies of Philippe's ancestors in Europe as well as his descendants following his arrival in America.

The DNA Project

In conjunction with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), the DELANO KINDRED is testing the DNA of some of our members with proven descent from Philippe Delano to establish a pattern of DNA that can be used to confirm descendancy from Philippe. In the process, we have also disproved speculation by some that Lt. Jonathan Delano might not have actually been one of Philippe's sons. If you have a male line of descent from Philippe or suspect that you do, and you'd like to prove it, we invite you to join our DNA project. (The testing is based on Y-Chromosomes, which are only passed down from male to male; so if there is a female in the line between you and Philippe, this test will not be able to prove your relationship.) You do not have to be a member of the DELANO KINDRED to participate in this effort. We recommend a minimum of the Y-67 test; the Y-12, Y-25 and Y-37 tests provide an insufficient level of data on which to make a conclusive determination.

The Gravestone Restoration Project

This project is an on-going project to identify Delano gravestones and markers in serious need of repair or restoration, and to arrange to have that work done. The latest markers to be restored are Benoni Delano's marker and, jointly with the Soule Kindred, Esther {Delano] Soule's marker in the Myles Standish Burying Ground in Duxbury.
