NL #57, March, 2008

In this issue we include the story of James Haskell Delano and the Russian Princess, a review of three publications written by DELANO KINDRED members, and an update on several issues involving DNA. Looking forward to the 2008 Reunion in Portland Maine, we include an overview of some of the early DELANO settlers who came to the region that became the State of Maine. Also included is updated information about the Reunion on 20 and 21 June 2008. As usual, we include the results of the 2007 Annual Questionnaire. We hope to see many of you in Portland at the Reunion and we wish you a very pleasant summer. To view this newsletter in it is entirety, click here

NL #56, November-December 2007

Because of the large section devoted to Dr. Bangs' research in the last issue, we are behind in some of our regular article series. Several of our DELANO Cousins have passed away and we have paid tribute to their lives-many of them rather extraordinary. You will see reference to an ancestor of Cousin Russel W. Patrick, Evaline Amelia DeLano. The "Journal of Evaline Amelia Delano 1861" which can be found in the website Document Repository, provides the story of her travels with her father from Michigan to Colorado at the beginning of the Civil War. It gives you a good sense of how one traveled west in that era. Thanks to an "alert reader," there is an article about DELANO silversmiths. Also included is information about the 2008 Reunion in Portland, ME, the exhibit of the papers of Capt. Samuel Delano Jr. in Duxbury, MA, and the drawings and watercolors of artist Milton Delano in Fairhaven, MA. To view this newsletter in it is entirety, click here

NL #55, July-August 2007

In this issue we are pleased to include Dr. Jeremy Bangs' report of his research visit to Lille, France. Since DELANO KINDRED funds were granted to Dr. Bangs for this research, it is fitting that the membership be the first to see it. Since Dr. Bangs may wish to publish his findings in a journal with a greater distribution, we have limited the distribution of this newsletter to the members in "good standing." Until Dr. Bangs publishes his report, we request that you not publish or further distribute his report or any portion thereof. You will note that we have replaced the old masthead logo with the new DELANO KINDRED logo approved by the membership. If you are downloading this newsletter from our members' website, you will be viewing the colorized version approved by your Board. You may also note that we have changed the spelling of Philippe's surname to de Lanoy. This is in keeping with the findings of Dr. Bangs and is also in parallel with an approved change to the bylaws discussed in the Annual Meeting article in this issue. Organizational changes include the change of our corporate address from Duxbury to 604 Hill Road in Boxborough, MA as shown on the last page of newsletter. We no longer have a Post Office Box address in Duxbury. Cousin Nancy Delano has turned over the responsibility for Publications Sales to Cousin Cindy Prosser. Consequently the Publication Sales address has been changed to our Membership Address: DELANO KINDRED, INC. P.O. Box 773, Schoolcraft, MI 49087-0773. We wish to thank Cousin Nancy for her many years of service in managing the sale of our publications. THANK YOU NANCY! To view this newsletter in it is entirety, click here

NL #54, March-April 2007

In this issue we describe the Delano connection to the Alexander Valley in California, where our 2007 reunion will be held on June 29 and 30. Many DELANOs have settled in the Pacific Coast States; however at this Reunion we celebrate the DELANO/Fitch/Carrillo connection. The DELANO ancestor who was responsible for this connection was Henry Delano Fitch. He married Josefa Carrillo of a prominent San Diego family when California was under Spanish rule. Henry D. Fitch was the son of Capt. Beriah Fitch and Sally Delano5 (Thomas4, Thomas 3, Lt Jonathan2, Philippe1). Sally (sometimes called Sarah) has the DFIP descent number 640. Henry was born on 7 May 1798 and went to sea at the age of 17. Through marriage, Capt. Fitch became the landowner of Rancho Sotoyome. The Rancho's 48,800 acres included the entire Alexander Valley as well as land outside the valley. Fitch hired Cyrus Alexander to manage the ranch. Later Alexander left Fitch's employ to start his own ranch. Fitch hired the brother of Kit Carson to carry on the management of Rancho Sotoyome. The valley later became known by Alexander?s name. Today the site of Alexander's homestead and part of his ranch are located on the land owned by the Alexander Valley Winery. We happily take note of Cousin John Ely Marsland's centennial birthday celebration, held at his home near Easton, Maryland on 19 January 2007 and offer our congratulations. Also in this issue we announce that we are upgrading the standard for our DNA testing program from a 25-marker test to a 37-marker test, in line with recommendations from the International Society of Genetic Genealogists (ISOGG). NL #53, October-November 2006

As we announced at the 2006 Annual Meeting, the 2007 Annual Meeting and Reunion will be held on Friday, 29 June, and Saturday, 30 June 2007, at the Doubletree Hotel Sonoma Wine Country, at One Doubletree Drive, in Rohnert Park, California. Rohnert Park is located about 10 miles south of Santa Rosa and about 50 miles north of San Francisco. This will be the first DELANO KINDRED Reunion to be held in the West and provides our western members the opportunity to attend a reunion midway between San Diego and Seattle instead of traveling to New England or other eastern states. Many DELANOs have settled in the Pacific Coast States. We have written several articles in the Bonnes Nouvelles about author Alonzo Delano (GHAAHD pg. 408) who traveled west in 1849 for reasons of improving his health. Several articles have also appeared in newsletters about De Lano Beach on the southern shores of Puget Sound in Washington and of the exploits of Capt. George Eugene De Lano (GHAAHD pg. 119). He was master of the ill-fated "Austria" (see the June 2003 Bonnes Nouvelles #43, pg 9). Another sea captain was Henry Delano Fitch, who married Josefa Carillo of a prominent San Diego family when California was under Spanish rule. Fitch became the land owner of Rancho Sotoyome. The Rancho's 48,800 acres covered much of what is now the Alexander Valley. Fitch hired Cyrus Alexander to manage the ranch. Later Alexander left Fitch's employ to start his own ranch. Fitch hired the brother of Kit Carson to carry on the management of Rancho Sotoyome. The valley later became known by Alexander's name. Today the site of the Alexander's homestead and part of his ranch are located on the land owned by the Alexander Valley Winery. This is the planned destination of our Saturday afternoon tour. Also in this issue is an excellent article on DNA testing by Maria Dering and Sandy Sanford which explains what DNA testing is, how Y-DNA tests can help prove ancestral relationships, and how to participate in the Delano Kindred's DNA program. Other items of interest include News from our Members, a discussion about adding past issues of this newsletter to the web site, mention of the reopening of the newly restored Sara Delano Roosevelt Park on Canal Street in New York City, recollection by Cousin John H. Somers of his meeting as a young boy with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the story of Alonzo Delano's nose provided by Cousin Muriel Curtis Cushing.
