NL #12, October 1994

A comprehensive report of the 1994 Annual Meeting in Plymouth, Massachusetts, kicks off this issue. Included is a an updated listing of the Officers, Directors, Committee Chairs and Appointees. The 1995 Annual Meeting will be held on August 12, 1995, in Michigan. A letter of invitation from the Religious and Military Order of the Knights of St. Catherine of Sinai to attend their annual investiture during the first weekend of November in Baltimore, Maryland, was published. According to the Order, the DELANO family has an hereditary right to knighthood in their Order due to the fact that Guilbert De Lannoy held such rights during his lifetime. An ancestor fan chart of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is included in this issue. Following that is a great article titled "Cousins: from kissing to fourth 4 times removed." which explains the "cousins" relationships that often confuse us. Muriel's Corner digs into fan charts, and the DELANO connection to the "Little House on the Prairie" is explained. A genealogical query regarding Peter Lanmon, his son Thomas and their family was published. Beginning in this issue is a new series on Genealogical Abstracts of the Revolutionary War: Pension Files, Part I. From the Delano section of Volume I A-E of the subject abstracts as compiled by Virgil D. White, the listings are reproduced here with additions by our Genealogist, Muriel Cushing, showing the appropriate page numbers from the GHAAHD for these individuals. NL #10, March 1994

Our NEWSLETTER now has a name! "Bonnes Nouvelles," the motto of the De Lannoy family and French for "Good News" or "Good Tidings," was suggested by Nancy DELANO. More information on the upcoming Annual Meeting at Plimouth Plantation is presented, along with a continuation of the articles begun in the December, 1993 Newsletter on Canadian DELANOs and European Places with a DELANO-DE LANNOY Connection. The European focus is on Philippe de la Noye and Leiden, Holland and includes an article reprinted from the April, 1983 edition of The Guardian in Canterbury (England) titled "The American Connection." This article references Philippe's home on Place Street, where he lived during the time he was waiting for passage to America on the Fortune. Next is a comprehensive article on "A Pilgrimage Through Leiden," complete with map. Muriel's Corner continues with information on tracing your family history. There is a query for information about Charles DELANO, who was born in either Indiana or Ohio and may have lived in Pulaski County, IN, in 1873-1874. The towns of Delano, Washington and Delano Beach, Washington are mentioned as part of the TOWNS of DELANO in NORTH AMERICA, THEN and NOW series. An essay about Philippe de la Noye authored by Richard Wilson Gouldin III as part of the DAR Essay Competition in Virginia this year is reprinted in this issue. Richard is a fifth-grade student at the Richmond County Elementary School in Warsaw, Virginia. Titled "Coming to America in Colonial Days 1607-1776," the essay imagines how Philippe must have felt as he experienced his life in those days. An index to the 1993 issues of the newsletter was provided. To view this newsletter in it is entirety, click here

NL #09, December 1993

This issue provides details of the 1994 Annual Meeting, to be held at Plimouth Plantation near Plymouth, Massachusetts. There are several Genealogical Queries seeking information on the parents of Elizabeth White Ripley, who married Isaac DELANO Jr. in Duxbury on 26 August 1781; on Sara Cole, who married John DELANO in Duxbury on 2 July 1718; and on the families of Spencer ARNOLD and Ambrose ARNOLD, ca 1794-1861 of Palermo, ME. Included is news on the climbing of DELANO PEAK in Utah (elev. 12,173) on 26 September by George D. Gerpheide and his sister, Joan G. Colgren and their families. In Muriel's Corner, she presents the start of a series on how to get started tracing your ancestors. An article on questionable genealogical organizations is reprinted from the Virginia Beach "Genealogical Society Newsletter" warning against groups that claim to have compiled a book filled with information about your surname and its history. It's probably bogus and a scam; directions are provided for reporting these scams. Articles on Canadian DELANOs, European places with DELANO-DE LANNOY connections, and a wonderful sketch by Julia DELANO Curtis of Jonathan DELANO 4th's powder horn that he had with him at Valley Forge in 1777 are included in this issue. Known as the "Roxbury Horn", this powder horn is described on page 329 of the GHAAHD. Two homes with DELANO connections are presented. The Rich-Twinn House in Akron, New York, is an unusual octagonal-shaped house once owned by Charles B. Rich, who was Hannah Elizabeth DELANO's second husband (GHAAHD, page 445). The second house belonged to John DELANO Jr. and is located in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Built of granite said to have been quarried on Jabez DELANO's original property, "Greystone Manor" was built around 1850. A reproduction of the Delano de Lannoy coat-of-arms from the GHAAHD, some pointers on protecting family papers, and a DE LANNOY word puzzle complete this issue.
